1. What’s your story? How did you get into all these languages?
More than 15 years ago, I was not really into languages. However, when I lived in Italy, I learned Italian quickly. This experience changed my life and the way I saw languages. From that moment on, I decided to learn languages not only when I needed them, but also out of passion. I’ve never stopped learning since then.
2. Which language(s) do you wish you could spend more time practising?
All of them. There is always room for improvement. So I try to practice them equally.
3. What are some languages you’d like to learn in the future?
I am already learning Tarifit (Riffian language). I would love to learn other languages from the same family (Amazigh languages), especially Kabylian and Shawiya.
4. So let’s be honest, which language has the most charm for you?
Classical Arabic. I enjoy listening to Arabic poetry. Nevertheless, I think all languages are beautiful: it really all depends on the speaker’s voice and intonation.
5. What’s the greatest pleasure you get from speaking so many languages?
I love seeing people smile when I use their language. It’s easier to meet new people when you speak their language. My life is never boring because I’m always doing something in different languages.
6. Some people say the world is really just going to have a few languages left in a 100 years, do you think this is really true?
Probably. I hope that HYPIA and hyperpolyglots / polyglots in general will play a role in preserving endangered languages.
7. What is your message to young (and not so young) people out there who are interested in studying multiple languages?
Learn every day and believe that you will get positive results even if it takes a lot of time. Make it enjoyable by reading articles or stories / watching videos about topics you like. Try to make friends and practice with them as much as possible. Speak and accept (love) your mistakes. Step outside your comfort zone and be passionate, because passion will always lead you to great ideas.
