1. What’s your story? How did you get into all these languages?

I was the kid who was bad at every language in elementary school. I had a hard time learning basic words in Romanian and to this day I have a mild dysgraphia, regarding spelling in all languages (including my native).

With English I was at the bottom of my class and just could not pick it up from the TV like the rest of the kids were doing it. Then something happened in high school. I got really good at English seemingly out of nowhere and I also picked up Spanish from TV in no time, later continuing in organized classes.

French was another story. I had a very difficult time with it in middle school and abandoned it for more than 10 years. Later on, I decided that I would like to continue, and I learnt it on my own, then moved to France and the rest is history.

Swedish came out of nowhere. I found a great opportunity to learn it and I took the chance. Three years later I can say that is a language I entirely learnt as an adult and I am probably the most proud of this one.

With Icelandic I had another opportunity to move to Iceland and learn the language there. I find it extremely hard to be honest but I am not giving up on it any time soon.

2. Which language(s) do you wish you could spend more time practising?

Currently I am studying Swedish for my language certificate, but I really wish I had more time and opportunity to immerse myself in Icelandic.

3. What are some languages you’d like to learn in the future?

Portuguese, Italian, Russian.

4. So let’s be honest, what’s the sexiest language?

I find Italian extremely sexy.

5. What’s the greatest pleasure you get from speaking so many languages?

My brain switching from one language to another without me even noticing. I think that is absolutely awesome. Also, I found a great community by going to events related to languages.

6. Some people say the world is really just going to have a few languages left in a 100 years, do you think this is really true?

I don’t think so. Languages have survived for thousands of years and I think they will stick around for thousands more. Language is part of who we are as individuals and they will probably, as a whole, stand the test of time.

7. What is your message to young (and not so young) people out there who are interested in studying multiple languages?

Just GO for it! It is never too late! A new language opens up so many opportunities, you never knew existed. With each language a different world awaits you.
